Preamble

This new event has been developed to provide a special opportunity for non-handicap racing of Cape Dory

Typhoons and Cape Dory 25s for the benefit of the members of New Haven Yacht Club. This NoR has been

developed in accordance with RRS Appendix J, except that entire sections not applicable are omitted.

1: Rules

1.1

The event is governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.

1.3

RRS 26 shall be replaced by a special starting sequence as specified in the sailing instructions.

1.4

Boats racing in the class of Cape Dory Typhoons shall reasonably attempt to comply with the class rules

outlined by the Typhoon Class Association (TCA); however, the rules of the TCA shall not be considered

protestable or enforceable within this event.

2: Sailing Instructions

The sailing instructions will be distributed by 9:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 by medium of the NHYC

electronic mailing list.

3: Communication

3.2

All boats shall carry a VHF radio capable of communicating on Channels 68 and 69.

3.3

On the water, the race committee will make courtesy broadcasts to competitors on VHF radio. The default

channel shall be 68. Channel 69 shall be used as a backup channel only as announced by the race

committee, typically if communications traffic on 68 becomes too great.

3.4

While racing, except in an emergency, a boat shall not make voice or data transmissions and shall not

receive voice or data communication that is not available to all boats.

4: Eligibility and Entry

4.1

This event is open to all boats of the Cape Dory Typhoon and Cape Dory 25 classes skippered by members

in good standing of New Haven Yacht Club.

4.4

Classes are defined as follows:

Class 1 Cape Dory Typhoon

Class 2 Cape Dory 25

4.5

Eligible boats may enter by request via correspondence with David Earle by email: drearle94@gmail.com.

The entry request shall identify the name of the skipper of the boat and the sail number if available. On the

day of the event, eligible boats may enter prior to the first warning signal by checking in with the race

committee verbally or over VHF radio.

4.6

Requests to enter after the first warning signal may be processed at the discretion of the race committee.

6: Crew limitations

Crew for each boat shall not exceed the specifications of the manufacturer’s placard, if applicable.

9: Schedule

9.1: Registration

Registration begins on Monday, July 6, 2026, 12:00 Noon or when this NoR is distributed.

9.2: Skippers’Meeting

A meeting for skippers shall be held at 10:00 A.M. on the day of the race under the pavilion at New Haven

Yacht Club.

9.4: Dates of Racing

All racing shall take place on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

9.5: Number of Races

The scheduled number of races is 4 for both classes, and the maximum number of races is 5 for both

classes.

9.6

The scheduled time of the warning signal for the first race is 11:25 A.M.

9.7

No warning signal shall be made after 3:30 P.M.

12: Venue

The racing area shall be Morris Cove and the surrounding waters of New Haven Harbor.

13: Courses

An outline of possible courses shall be provided in the Sailing Instructions. The fixed marks which may be

used are as follows. All marks are government buoys inside the breakwaters of New Haven Harbor: #10A,

#12, and #14. One additional mark in the shape of a tetrahedron may be set by the race committee. The

race committee shall determine the course based on the conditions on the day of the race. The course(s)

shall be announced at the Skippers’ Meeting on the morning of the race, as well as over VHF radio no less

than 5:00 minutes prior to the first warning signal. The course shall consist of no more than 3 marks,

excluding the start/finish line.

15: Scoring

15.1

The scoring system is as follows:

For each race, the number of boats in the race “n” shall be the maximum score. The scores for each place

shall be as follows:

15.2

3 races are required to be completed to constitute a series.

15.5

A boat’s series score shall be one of the following:

a) When fewer than 4 races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race

scores.

b) When 4 or more races have been completed, a boat’s series score shall be the total of her race

scores, excluding her 1 worst score.

22: Risk Statement

RRS 3 states: ‘The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue to race is hers

alone.’ By participating in this event each competitor agrees and acknowledges that sailing is a

potentially dangerous activity with inherent risks. These risks include strong winds and rough seas,

sudden changes in weather, failure of equipment, boat handling errors, poor seamanship by other boats,

loss of balance on an unstable platform and fatigue resulting in increased risk of injury. Inherent in the

sport of sailing is the risk of permanent, catastrophic injury or death by drowning, trauma,

hypothermia or other causes.

24: Prizes

The boat with the highest accumulated series score, in each class, in accordance with the scoring rules

stated above, shall be recorded as the winner of her class for the event, and her skipper shall receive an

award trophy at the annual New Haven Yacht Club banquet. The first, second, and third place boats will be

acknowledged in a communication to the members of New Haven Yacht Club, along with the full results of

the event.
